Anonymity is simultaneously the Internet's greatest blessing and biggest curse. Unfortunately, the ability to mask one's true identity can sometimes lead people to conduct themselves in a way they otherwise would not. Many mistakenly believe that they can commit Internet-based crimes without getting caught.
This is not the case. Internet-based offenses are taken seriously and often carry strict punishments. Many even rise to the level of federal crimes.
As with many federal crimes, the U.S. Sentencing Commission has established sentencing guidelines for child pornography offenses.
Lately though, federal judges have been refusing to follow the recommended federal sentencing structure. They say the guidelines impose sentences that are unduly harsh when compared to the severity of the crime.

Massachusetts treats drunk driving as a serious crime. Suspected drunk drivers who cause accidents resulting in injury or significant property damage are likely to be pursued doggedly by local prosecutors. This is true even in cases where the alleged drunk driver is underage.
One Peabody teen is experiencing this firsthand after allegedly causing a Massachusetts drunk driving accident in mid-December.
One of the sad truths about drug addiction is that it often leads otherwise good-hearted people to commit crimes in an attempt to support an increasingly expensive habit.
The forces of addiction are overwhelming. It is not at all rare for Boston criminal defense lawyers to encounter people who are facing charges for theft, burglary or prescription forgery because they were desperate for a way to obtain or afford their drug of choice. This is especially true with regard to prescription opiate painkillers such as oxycodone, OxyContin and Percocet.
